Survival Rates of Cassin’s and Rhinoceros Auklets at Triangle Island, British Columbia1

چکیده
We estimated survival of Cassin’s Auklet (Ptychoramphus aleuticus) and Rhinoceros Auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) from recapture rates during 1994–1997. For both species, a two ‘‘age’’-class model provided the best fit. Estimates of local adult survival were significantly lower for Cassin’s Auklet (0.672 6 0.047) than for Rhinoceros Auklet (0.829 6 0.095). Our estimate of survival appears lower than that required for the maintenance of a stable population of Cassin’s Auklets. The available information indicates that a low survival rate and a declining population at Triangle Island are plausible, particularly given the recent large scale oceanographic changes which have occurred in the North Pacific Ocean. Nevertheless, additional mark-recapture data and indexes of population size are required to rigorously demonstrate population declines at the world’s largest Cassin’s Auklet colony.

Environmental control of the breeding success of rhinoceros auklets at Triangle Island, British Columbia
There are few studies of the mechanistic links between physical environmental processes and biotic responses in marine ecosystems that have strong predictive power. At Triangle Island, the largest seabird colony along Canada’s Pacific coast, annual breeding success of rhinoceros auklets Cerorhinca monocerata varies dramatically. Previous studies have correlated this variability with ocean tempe...
متن کاملSeabird seasonal trophodynamics: isotopic patterns in a community of Pacific alcids
We measured δ15N and δ13C values in the blood of breeding adults and nestlings of 5 species of alcids at Triangle Island, British Columbia, to estimate the extent to which these seabirds alter their foraging ecology across successive breeding stages. Considerable intraspecific (stage-tostage) and interspecific variation was found. Two species—common murre Uria aalge and pigeon guillemot Cepphus...
متن کاملGenetic structure of rhinoceros auklets, Cerorhinca monocerata, breeding in British Columbia, Alaska, and Japan
The rhinoceros auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata) breeds on islands in the North Pacific from California to Japan. Breeding colonies are not evenly distributed along the coastline nor are population numbers similar throughout the range with approximately 50 % of the birds breeding in British Columbia, Canada (Rodway 1991). Like other puffins (tribe Fraterculini), rhinoceros auklets lay a single-egg...
متن کاملInter-annual variation in the diet, provisioning and growth of Cassin’s auklet at Triangle Island, British Columbia: responses to variation in ocean climate
We studied parental provisioning and chick growth rates of Cassin’s auklet Ptychoramphus aleuticus at Triangle Island, British Columbia, Canada, from 1996 to 1999. Auklet reproductive performance and ocean climate conditions during these years were highly variable, and reflected in the diet composition. Chick growth was maximal when the diet was predominated by copepods, in particular Neocalanu...
متن کاملTrophic Relationships among Seabirds in Central California: Combined Stable Isotope and Conventional Dietary Approach’
We used stable isotope analysis (SIA) and conventional techniques of diet assessment to determine marine trophic relationships in the Gulf of the Farallones, California, with an emphasis on marine birds. Stable-carbon (SW) and nitrogen (WN) isotopes were obtained from 98 tissue samples of 16 species representing primary and secondary consumers in 1993-1994. The valies of iYT ranged from -2O.i%;...
